Texting, forward head posture, and neck pain...

One of the things I've noticed recently around town whether it is at a restaurant or even at the gym for instance is that it seems everyone is constantly looking down at their phone. The 2 main things I notice are the lack of social interaction among people and all of the poor posture that will need to be addressed in the future.

A hot topic for discussion that I see regularly is that texting causes next pain. This is somewhat of a misnomer in that the act of physically texting does not cause pain but rather the issue lies in that it is more of the user assuming "poor posture" more often. Essentially what it is, is something called forward head posture which has been researched long before the advent of texting and wifi. Essentially the head forward position is the exact opposite position I would want to put someone in, for instance if  I were doing rehab in my office for someone with a decreased normal curvature of the neck or if they were having an issue with a disc in the neck or arm tingling and numbness I would be focused on exercises that put people into extension or more simply "looking up" to achieve a therapeutic affect.Think about how often you, your family and friends spend looking down at a phone. If you are like most people, it’s quite a bit throughout the day. Typically, we spend about 2 hours per day looking down at the phone, and teens alone on average send over 3,000 texts per month!
