Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis affects about 2 million people in the U.S. each year. It is one of the more common causes of pain in the bottom of the foot and the heal. There are several other conditions such as stress fractures, nerve entrapment and heal spurs that also cause pain in the bottom of the foot. The problem may be plantar fasciitis alone or in combination with another condition. Plantar fasciitis occurs when the tendons of the fascia located in the bottom of the foot become inflammed or tight. Generally the symptoms can range from mild pain to severe. Plantar fasciitis can be of a gradual onset, meaning it develops over time or it can be more acute in nature such as in just starting an exercise regiment. Typically the pain in the bottom of the foot is noticed with the first few steps in the morning or after prolonged sitting, however this problem can be noticed with walking throughout the day and standing for prolonged periods depending on the severity of the condition.

In our office we have found noticeable improvements in foot pain by utilizing several different modalities which includes therapeutic ultrasound, myofascial release and chiropractic adjustment to the foot and spine. I generally like to include in the treatment plan therapeutic exercises and stretches to be done in office and at home. Depending on the severity and response to treatment in some cases a foot orthotic may be indicted.
