Dry Needling at Hollabaugh Chiropractic

dry needles in persons skinDry needling is a cutting-edge therapy that uses the same type of needles used for acupuncture to reduce muscle spasms, tightness, and pain. While acupuncture is an ancient healthcare system based on improving the flow of chi along the body’s energy meridians, dry needling is a modern approach that directly addresses injured tissues.

This therapy is part of the comprehensive approach to care that we offer our Hollabaugh Chiropractic patients.

How It Works

This therapy aims to examine the part of the body where you are experiencing myofascial pain (either for a muscle, tendon or ligament) and identify the tender spot. Then, Dr. Jason will insert a very fine needle directly into that myofascial trigger point.

The needles stimulate the body’s healing response, improving blood flow to the area and releasing tension.

What to Expect

Dr. Jason will explain the process and show you the needles before he begins. He’ll demonstrate if you’re uncomfortable with needles by placing one in his arm. The needle going into the skin is usually not painful, but you may feel a very brief, sharp pain when the muscle twitch response occurs. If the pain does not go away in a second, Dr. Jason will remove or reposition the needle to make it more comfortable for you.

What Are the Benefits?

As part of your overall care plan, dry needling can be very helpful in soft tissue conditions such as muscle spasms/tightness, tendinitis, tendinosis and tendinopathies. Relief comes within 4-5 sessions for many patients, although some experience immediate relief. If you don’t feel improvement after a handful of sessions, it’s an indication that it’s not the right approach for your situation.

As with all of our care, we will monitor your progress over a few sessions to ensure you’re improving, and we’ll alter your treatment plan as needed over the course of your care.
